RIDING VOLUNTEERS (MARSHALS)

Riding Marshals provide support to riders along the five routes. Responsibilities include alerting riders to potentially dangerous road conditions, assisting with crossings, pointing out route splits and important turns, providing bike repair, answering questions, and attending to issues along the routes.

SWEEPS

Bike sweeps provide safety and direction to those riders at the back of the pack. Their responsibilities include helping participants with flats and bike repair, responding to road emergencies, providing information to participants and spectators, and helping stationary marshals wherever needed. Note that volunteers in this role will be riding behind the slowest rider on their route. -Sweeps must be 18 years of age or older by October 1, 2023. -Sweeps must be able to ride the entire route for which they sign up (15, 30, 55, 75, or 100 miles). -Sweeps must attend one virtual orientation before the event.

COURSE MARSHALS

Course Marshals are stationed along the route in potentially confusing or dangerous areas, and are assigned to complete specific tasks in their area. Responsibilities include: alerting participants to road conditions, assisting with road emergencies, encouraging slow riders, and providing information to participants, spectators, and nearby residents. While most of the role will be stationary, Course Marshals should bring their own bike and must be comfortable riding back to the Finish when they've finished their assignments. -Course Marshals must attend one virtual orientation before the event.

Responsibilities: Direct participants safely through traffic circle to continue on Bay Avenue. A police officer will be present to direct cars. To sign up for this volunteer role you must be 18 years of age or older and be able to ride to and from your position, which is about 1 mile from the Start Site. Responsibilities: Notify riders of split ahead. To sign up for this volunteer role you must be 18 years of age or older and be able to ride to and from your position, which is about 1 mile from the Start Site. Responsibilities: Direct riders to yield to runners from the overlapping half marathon. To sign up for this volunteer role you must be 18 years of age or older and be able to ride to and from your position, which is about 4 miles from the Start Site. Responsibilities: Direct riders to yield to runners from the overlapping half marathon. To sign up for this volunteer role you must be 18 years of age or older and be able to ride to and from your position, which is about 5.5 miles from the Start Site. Responsibilities: You will be stationed at Ocean Ave & Shrewsbury Bridge Intersection, and will direct riders straight on Ocean Ave. To sign up for this volunteer role you must be 18 years of age or older and be able to ride to and from your position, which is about 3.3 miles from the Start Site. Responsibilities: Hold a "Slow" sign to oncoming traffic and alert riders of right turn ahead onto Beach Rd. To sign up for this volunteer role you must be 18 years of age or older and be able to ride to and from your position, which is about 5.7 miles from the Start Site. STATIONARY VOLUNTEERS

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: setting up tables, serving snacks and beverages at the Start/Finish or Rest Areas, assisting riders at Information Areas, and providing information to spectators and community members. Bike riding skills are not required. Volunteer groups are welcome! ***Please note that Stationary Volunteers do not ride the Twin Lights Ride***

FERRY TEAM VOLUNTEERS

New York City-based Ferry Greeters check-in and assist participants and volunteers as they board the ferry in lower Manhattan. Ferry Greeter volunteers may board the 8:00 AM ferry if they wish. Highlands-based Ferry Greeters welcome participants and volunteers as they arrive, then direct them towards registration.

START/FINISH AREA VOLUNTEERS

Start & Finish volunteers cover a multitude of important tasks including the setup and breakdown of the start & finish area, directing bike traffic, preparing and helping with Breakfast, registration, and providing information to participants and spectators. Start & Finish area volunteers do not need to bring a bike.

REST AREA VOLUNTEERS
Rest area volunteers cover a multitude of important tasks including the setup and breakdown of rest areas, directing bike traffic, preparing and handing out snacks/drinks, and providing information to participants and spectators. Rest Area volunteers do not need to bring a bike, but they must be able to travel directly to the rest area.
